CHESHIRIZATION,
mille mõtles välja James Matisoff, et tähistada fonoloogilisi muutusi, kus mingi häälik on küll sõnast haihtunud, aga temast on siiski jäänud teatav jälg, nagu irve irvikkassist. Näiteks prantsuse keele sõnalõpu n-idest (mis ei hääldu) jäänud jälg on nendele eelneva täishääliku nasaalistumine. (Olid vanad head ajad, kus vin blanc hääldati tõepoolest [vin blaŋk].)
Mulle tundub, et selle näide võiks olla ka see prantsuse keele kiuslik h aspiré, mis ei hääldu, aga ei mõtlegi lasta liasooni teha seal, kus paistab, et võiks.
NB, cheshirization ei ole teadusterminina siiski veel aktsepteeritud.

`Did you say pig, or fig?' said the Cat.
`I said pig,' replied Alice; `and I wish you wouldn't keep appearing and vanishing so suddenly: you make one quite giddy.'
`All right,' said the Cat; and this time it vanished quite slowly, beginning with the end of the tail, and ending with the grin, which remained some time after the rest of it had gone.

Well! I've often seen a cat without a grin,' thought Alice; `but a grin without a cat! It's the most curious thing I ever saw in my life!'
